Romanian Budimex Appeal

On Thursday 1st November the container from
Cushendall arrived at the Budimex Sick Children hospital in Romania. This is
the third such container which was loaded at Red Bay Boats the previous week
after a 9 month period gathering the contents through kind donations from the
local communities.

The container was packed with a large selection of items for
the hospital and families in the surrounding area. Our liaison at the hospital
is Sister Aloysius who at the age of 87 runs up and down the stairs like a 20
year old! Each year Sister gives us a wish list which we always try to fulfil.
Top of her list this year were wheelchairs, pushchairs, childrens’ clothes,
medical dressings, nappies, toiletries and cleaning materials. The container
left Cushendall with 80 wheelchairs and over 60 pushchairs. In Romania there
are a large number of children with disabilities and Sister tells me that she
has allocated her first wheelchair to a Grandmother who regularly carries her
12 year old disabled grandson around, so a simple item like a wheelchair can
transform lives!

Sister organises the unloading of the container and ensures
the items all go to the children and the needy. Over the past week the hospital
has taken in seven abandoned children, Sister will look after, nurse and clothe
these children with the items from the container.

However the whole project would not be possible without
Seamus Mc Keegan of Mc Keegan International who organises and pays for the
shipping directly to the hospitals’ front door. The cost of the shipping is
enormous and Seamus signs up to help the appeal each year without hesitation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who
donated items, fundraised and helped to organise and load the container for
