Mischief

Mischief

Mischief, the first RIB to be awarded a P5 license, has just been delivered to her owner, Mike Hallahan, having successfully completed sea trials and final build survey.

Earlier this year, Redbay were awarded plan approval for the construction of a RIB to P5 standard. "P5" is a commercial passenger carrying license for operation in the Republic of Ireland. Before Mischief, RIBs were only ever awarded a P3 license, which limits the operation of the craft to 3 miles from land. With the P5 license, Mischief is licensed to operate up to 30 miles from land.

Build Surveys

Under the regulations of the Department of Marine, any vessel built to P5 standard must be surveyed throughout the build. Redbay worked alongside the Department of Marine, and in particular, surveyor Robert O’Brien. Robert visited the build in progress almost weekly and during any significant stages. Working with Robert and the Department, Redbay have built a vessel that meets the requirements of the P5 license without infringing on any of the requirements of the customer.

Mischief

Mike intends to run Mischief from the Cork and Waterford area, on whale watching trips, corporate trips etc, and will operate within the "Whale Of A Time" adventure trips company. The provision of the P5 license means Mike has great flexibility selecting areas to visit.

Under the regulations of the license, Mischief has a limited operational speed of 28 knots. The higher speeds over existing vessels will allow the RIB to reach key areas faster, meaning more time for viewing the wildlife etc.

Layout

Mischief is based around the full flush deck Stormforce 11m Cabin. Internally, she has been fitted with 8 Passenger seats with integrated seat belts. There are also 2 KAB suspension seats for helm and crew, again with safety seat belts. This layout, along with the full GRP cabin, gives the passengers and crew a very safe and comfortable environment when at sea.

Forward, there is the usual double berth, fitted with a toilet. Aft, there is the large storage compartment under the deck, which is accessible from a large Freeman deck hatch.

Propulsion

The RIB is powered by the twin Yamaha ME421 installation, giving a maximum installed power of 480hp. On sea trials, Mischief is capable of 34 knots with a full load of passengers and fuel, and has a top speed of 37 knots.
